Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed Senate Bill 2749 into law, formally classifying gambling disorder under the state’s Substance Use Disorder Act. The legislation updates the state’s addiction treatment framework to address behavioral addictions alongside substance use.
The new statute broadens the responsibilities of the Illinois Department of Human Services. Specifically, the IDHS Division of Substance Abuse Prevention and Recovery will now oversee gambling-related care programs. This adjustment aligns behavioral health services with established substance abuse protocols.
Program Expansion
State agencies will apply current prevention and treatment standards to compulsive gambling cases. The measure integrates gambling disorder into existing recovery infrastructure. The law takes effect immediately following the governor’s signature.
